9. Children, youth and families
Most growing synagogues give this area substantial prominence.
Features found include:
- cheder or religion school;
- nursery;
- parent-and-toddler sessions;
- children’s services;
- youth minyan;
- bar/bat mitzvah programme;
- youth clubs;
- camps and residential trips;
- family festival events;
- holiday clubs;
- teenage leadership;
- safeguarding information;
- parental consent forms;
- medical information forms;
- staff and volunteer information;
- online registration and payment;
- timetable or parent portal;
- curriculum;
- learning resources.
New London Synagogue includes a clearly branded “Youth Journey” and cheder area, with some information protected for members or parents.
Safeguarding features
The better sites include:
- safeguarding policy;
- name and contact details of the DSL;
- reporting route;
- separate concern form;
- privacy explanation;
- code of conduct;
- photography consent;
- safer recruitment statement;
- links to external safeguarding organisations.
This is still inconsistent across UK synagogue websites. Many publish a policy PDF but do not provide a simple reporting route.
